The original National Course (Old Course) was
open for play in 1988 and was designed by leading golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jnr. This
course is a generally hilly course combining amazing coastal views, challenging ball carries and slick,
undulating putting surfaces into a test of golf not previously seen in Australia.
A number of holes provide spectacular views with the standout hole in terms of beauty being the 7th
hole. A par 3 of 135 metres, it plays over a cavernous ravine to a large green which runs from left to
right. The backdrop to this hole is the coastline of the Mornington Peninsula heading down to Portsea.
There is really only one place to hit the ball...and that is on the green.
The Old Course at The National is a very enjoyable test of golf....if you are hitting the ball straight, if
the wind is not blowing and if you are putting well!
